Digital Transformation in Higher Education: Will Universities Jump or Wait to Be Pushed?

Speaker: Dr. Barney Dalgarno, Director of Learning Online, Charles Sturt University, Australia

Higher Education is at a crossroads. Regulation has protected the business models of traditional universities and prevented the levels of digital disruption seen in other industries. Politicians and students have lamented the rising costs and industry groups have called for more relevant curriculum and improved graduate employability. Transformative changes to student experiences, building on contemporary research on cognition and learning, expressed through polysynchronous and augmented reality environments, underpinned by big data and machine learning, are within reach.

However, current regulatory frameworks discourage the competitive forces that could drive these kinds of innovations. Arguably, if universities cannot adapt to better meet the needs of students, government and industry, regulatory protections may need to be lifted to create the enabling conditions for disruptive innovation.

This presentation will describe the state of play in digitally enabled higher education, identify potential innovations building on pedagogical and technological research, and unpack the aspects of the broader environment that might drive or constrain positive change.

학습자 역량중심 Flipped learning 수업설계
Instructional Design of Learner Competency-Centered Flipped Learning

Speaker: 간진숙 박사(한림대학교 역량교육혁신원)
Dr. Jinsook Kan, Institute of Innovative Education of Office of Academic Affairs, Hallym University

PBL(Problem Based Learning), TBL(Team Based Learning), PBL(Project Based Learning)을 적용한 Flipped Learning 수업설계의 사례들을 보여주고자 합니다. 이 사례들은 학습자의 요구와 문제를 밝혀내고 목표를 명확히 설정하여 수업내용, 방법, 평가 등 체제적, 조직적으로 설계한 Flipped Learning입니다.

In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, universities have a responsibility-based education system that reflects social demand, student demand, and future demand. In particular, 21C core competencies such as creativity, critical thinking ability, problem solving ability, communication and cooperation should be acquired in university education and reformed to cope with challenging future job environments. As a result of this, universities are trying to apply educational methods such as Flipped Learning, which is a learner - centered instructional model prepared by both instructors and learners, to alternative education methods. However, Flipped Learning in colleges has various characteristics such as learner characteristics. Depending on the system, it is difficult to operate. In order to solve these problems, Flipped Learning should be designed with Flipped Learning lesson as a top priority. In this seminar, Dr. Kan will introduce examples of Flipped Learning classes designed to strengthen the learner's competence. Specifically, she will show examples of Flipped Learning class design using PBL (Problem Based Learning), TBL (Team Based Learning), and PBL (Project Based Learning). These cases are Flipped Learning which is systematically designed in terms of contents, method, and evaluation by clarifying learners' needs, problems and goals.

[ Technology Track ] [Korean]  Workshop 1: eTeacher 프로그램 – 21세기 학습자를 위한 교수자의 디지털 전문성 개발 (The eTeacher Programme - Digital Professionals for 21st Century Learners)

Facilitator: Suhyun Yoo, Senior Educational Consultant

The creation of Blackboard’s eTeacher Programme was driven by institutions that needed to meet the challenge of 21st century learner engagement with educational technology. The eTeacher program supports an institution’s desire to nurture the professional development of its teaching staff, equipping them with the skills and pedagogical knowledge to confidently deliver a high quality digital learning experience to the learners of tomorrow. The eTeacher Program is for educational professionals in Higher, Further, Professional and K-12 sectors.

This workshop offers the chance to sample a variety of course content, activities and assessments in an engaging and authentic face-to-face delivery environment (as well as opportunities to interact with synchronous and asynchronous training environments and materials).

* Bringing your devices, such as laptop or tablet PC, is highly recommended to get the better experience with eTeacher program during the workshop.

[ Adoption Track ] [English]  Workshop 2: Blending Learning and Pedagogical Puzzles

Facilitator: Dr. Susan D'Aloia, Client Success Advocate, Asia, Blackboard

Is every learner an “A” student? Does this matter? What matters is that learners authentically progress their competence. Frequently though, educators face problems with engagement and effectiveness. In this hands-on workshop, we will view problems such as “puzzles” that we can solve with Blackboard’s solutions and the specific tools they provide. Individually and as a group, we will establish a teacher mindset and negotiate a student mindset to best address various pedagogical puzzles. Such puzzles may include lack of motivation, learner resistance to making goals and how to elevate the relevance of our courses. Feel free to share any puzzles you might be working on in your courses!

[ Student Engagement Track ] [Korean]  Workshop 3: 모범적인 코스 설계 - 전반적인 학생 참여를 지원하기 위한 콘텐츠 전달, 협력 활동 및 평가 설계 (Designing exemplary online courses in Blackboard - Experiment with Content Delivery, Collaboration and Evaluation to Support Overall Student Engagement)

Facilitator: Yoon Seyoung & Nick Benwell, Solutions Engineers, Blackboard Korea
